In this Boijmans Studie Milou Goverde publishes the results of her research into nineteenth-century frames in the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Some frames were commissioned by artists themselves, others by art dealers, collectors, or museum directors. But what were their criteria, and which frame makers did they turn to? The publication gains more insight into the stylistic, material, and technical development of frames over the long nineteenth century (1780-1914), and makes clear that behind every combination of painting and frame lies a unique story.
